What is correlative conjunction and examples?

Correlative conjunctions include pairs such as “both/and,” “either/or,” “neither/nor,” “not/but” and “not only/but also.” For example: either/or – I want either the cheesecake or the chocolate cake. both/and – We’ll have both the cheesecake and the chocolate cake.

The adversative connectors or connections adversative, bind two identical syntactical elements and indicate a contrast or incompatibility of ideas or concepts. These elements can be words, phrases, or clauses. For example, look at the sentences: «I am poor, but honest» and «I want to buy it, but I have no money.»

In the first sentence, the nexus «but» joins two adjectives; and in the second, two clauses. Both indicate a contrast. On the other hand, these adversative connectors comprise both coordinating conjunctions («but», «but», «although», «more»), and adverbial phrases with adversative value («however», «nevertheless»).

Adversative conjunctions

Now then, the conjunction «more» is used almost exclusively in the written cult record. This has the same meaning of «but», and is used only to connect clauses: «He did not have great wealth, but he did not care.» For its part, the conjunction «although» has the function of an adversative nexus when it can be replaced by «but».

It is the opposite case: it is then a concessive connector. Thus, in the sentence «It is difficult, although not impossible», the «although» is adversative («It is difficult, but not impossible»). On the other hand, in the sentence «I will go even if it rains», it is not. This is evident when substituting for «but»: «I’ll go but it rains.»

Semantically, connections between coordinated clauses can be subdivided into two types: marked coordinative connection and unmarked coordinative connection.

A marked coordination is expressed by conjunctions and adverbial connectors that represent four basic types of relations:

1) Copulative (harmony or agreement);

2) Disjunctive (the choice or alternation);

3) Adversative (contrast, contradiction, or opposition);

Let’s have a closer look at the four logical types of coordination.

a) chronological sequence: We heard a loud noise and a toy drone came into view.

b) cause and consequence: We were not persistent enough, and he became reluctant.

c) contrast: Cleverness is good, and patience is better.

d) condition: Give me one more chance, and I won’t let you down.

e) comment or explanation: No viable explanation can be found – and that’s really challenging.

If two negative clauses are linked with the help of and, we often find either at the end of the second clause: Sara didn’t know the answer and Paul didn’t either.

The conjunction nor joins two negative clauses: I didn’t know his problem, nor did I care to help him.

The second clauses of compound sentences opening with neither, nor, and neither, and nor, and so always have inverted word order: I don’t know you well and neither do I trust you.

The conjunctive adverb then joins clauses describing successive events: He was really chatty tonight, then he fell asleep.

Disjunctive sentences can be used to give advice, a warning or an order. Such sentences consist of an imperative clause and a clause opening with or/otherwise and containing a verb in the future tense: Stop playing dumb, or I will tell your parents about it.

The correlative either emphasizes the exclusion of one of the alternatives: Either our calculations are faulty or the task itself contains some mistake.

The clause introduced by or may express a restatement or correction of what is said in the first clause: Penny will have a successful acting career, or at least she thinks so.

Coordinate clauses joined by disjunctive connectors may contain an implied condition, real or unreal: Hurry up, or we’ll all be late!; Please, tell me the truth; otherwise I won’t be able to help you.; Percy is busy at the Ministry, otherwise he would have come for Christmas.

Adversative coordination joins clauses containing opposition, contradiction or contrast. Adversative connectors are: the conjunctions and / but, while, whilst, whereas, the conjunctive adverbs however, yet, still, nevertheless, nonetheless and the conjunctive particle only. Adversative coordination may also be realized asyndetically: I had a lot of revelations about the future in my dreams – none of them came true.

The main adversative conjunction is but, which expresses adversative connection in a very general way. The clause introduced by but conveys some event that is opposite to what is expected from the contents of the first clause: The rise is going to be hard, but that isn’t going to stop us.

The conjunctions while and whereas express contrastive relations: Some people might find it funny, while others would consider it downright offensive. I’m fond of New-age music, whereas my cousin Leo is more into classic rock.

Among coordinative connectives the particle only is frequently used to join clauses with adversative connection, mainly in colloquial English: Those shoes are amazing, only they come at a shockingly high price!

Causative-consecutive coordination joins clausesconnected in such a way that one of them contains a reason and the other – a consequence: She couldn’t face her social anxiety issues any longer, so she started seeking professional help. The second clause may contain either the reason or the result of the event conveyed by the previous clause. It might be introduced by the coordinating conjunction for or semi-functional connectors of adverbial character nevertheless, besides, otherwise, therefore, moreover, consequently, however, yet, still, thus, accordingly, hence, then, so, so that. A causative clause may be also joined asyndetically: Mother-in-law was gone; he now spent more time with his wife.; She cannot understand our ways; she is all about her looks.

A for — clause differs from a subordinate clause of reason in that it never precedes the clause it is joined to. If a sentence begins with for, it means that the sentence is linked with the previous one: When I first saw him I was alarmed. For I never saw a man wearing his pajamas in public.

All causative-consecutive coordinators, with the exception of for, can be preceded by and: You can’t boss me around like some 5-year-old, and besides, that was totally inappropriate!

Hence occurs in one-member as well as two-member clauses: The guy was born and raised in Texas, hence his strange taste in music.

If the coordinator is so or yet, it is usual to repeat the subject: I needed someone to cover for me so I tried to talk them into that.

Adversative conjunctions

Что такое союз в английском языке?

Союз или conjunction – это служебная часть речи, которая логически связывает слова, фразы и части предложения. Союзы в английском языке отличаются тем, что они не изменяются и не зависят ни от каких грамматических характеристик соединяемых слов.
Союзы могут классифицироваться по строению или по функции в предложении.

Английские союзы по строению

but — а, но
and — и
till — пока
that — что
if – если
after — после того, как

— произошли от других частей речи и имеют в своем составе приставку или суффикс

however (how + ever) — тем не менее
therefore (there + fore) – поэтому

whereas (where + as) – тогда как, в то время как

Adversative conjunctions

Adversative conjunctions

Подчинительные союзы

Подчинительные союзы в английском языке (или Subordinating conjunctions) соединяют придаточное предложение с главным. Так и получаются сложноподчиненные предложения. Таких слов в английском языке довольно много. Они делятся по подгруппам, в зависимости от того, какой именно вид придаточного предложения вводит данное слово.

Adversative conjunctions

Alice is asleep upstairs. And Bobby is playing in the garden —

Neither I nor my friend knew conjunctions before.

Conjunctions – служебная часть речи, связывающая слова, предложения или их отдельные зависимые части. Не являются членами предложения. К союзу не задать вопрос от какого-либо слова. По этим критериям мы их распознаем.

Соединяют равные по значимости слова, однородные члены предложения, независимые предложения

Не забудьте поставить запятую перед союзом, соединяющим независимые предложения. Её можно опустить только в случае, если предложения ну очень короткие. А однородные члены предложения и вовсе не нуждаются в запятых.

Do you want some tea or coffee? (Ты хочешь немного чаю или кофе?)

Соединяют только зависимые от основного предложения, поэтому их и называют придаточными.

Союз всегда ставится в начале зависимого предложения, запятая не ставится.

You’ll get your computer back after you finish the homework (Ты получишь свой комп после того, как ты закончишь уроки)

Парные союзные

Соединяют слова, однородные члены предложения и равные части одного предложения.

Запятая зачастую не ставится. Можно поставить только в случае, если есть необходимость выделить интонационно или при соединении нескольких длинных фраз.

Both I and my friend become specialists in conjunctions (И я, и мой друг стали специалистами по союзам)We’ve just learnt not only conjunctions, but also their value (Мы только что узнали не только союзы, но и их значение)

Союзные наречия

Соединяют два независимых предложения в одно сложносочиненное.

Ставятся в начале предложения, выделяется запятой.

The last party was awful. Moreover, I was disappointed (Последняя вечеринка была ужасной. Более того, я был разочарован).

All the best!

Союзы в английском языке и что они соединяют

Союзы в английском языке — это служебные слова, которые 1) соединяют слова в простом предложении, 2) соединяют части сложного предложения. Например:

Nice and fluffy. — Милый и пушистый.

Small but proud. — Маленькая, но гордая.

He was running as if a dog was chasing him. — Он бежал так, будто за ним гналась собака.

You can park by the mall as long as there are no customers. — Вы можете парковаться у торгового центра, но лишь пока нет покупателей.

Иногда также выделяют производные союзы — образованные от других частей речи (until, unless), и сложные — состоящие из двух корней (however, moreover).

Союзы и союзные слова в английском языке

He is the man who found the treasure. — Он тот человек, который нашел сокровище (who — подлежащее)

I don’t know what you shold do. — Я не знаю, что тебе следует делать (what — дополнение).

Примеры предложений с союзными словами будут приведены ниже, когда мы будем разбирать сложноподчиненные предложения.

Союзы в простых и сложных предложениях

В простом предложении союзы соединяют однородные члены:

My parrot can speak English and Russian. — Мой попугай может говорить по-английски и по-русски.

It is sunny but humid. — Сегодня солнечно, но душно.

В сложном предложении союзы соединяют входящие в него части.

Напомню, сложные предложения бывают сложносочиненными, где части равноправны, и сложноподчиненными, где можно выделить основную часть (главное предложение) и зависимую (придаточное предложение).

Союзы, соединяющие части сложносочиненного предложения, называют сочинительными, сложноподчиненного — подчинительными.

Примеры сочинительных союзов:

My parrot can speak Russian but it can’t speak English. — Мой попугай говорит по-русски, но не умеет говорить по-английски.

It is sunny today but I’m at work. — Сегодня солнечно, но я на работе.

Примеры подчинительных союзов:

My parrot can speak because I train it every day. — Мой попугай умеет говорить, потому что я дрессирую его каждый день.

I am always at work when it is sunny. — Я всегда на работе, когда на улице солнце.

Сочинительные союзы в английском языке

Сочинительные союзы в английском языке соединяют слова в предложении и части сложносочиненного предложения.

В простом предложении союз and выполняет ту же роль, что и союз «и» в русском языке — соединяет однородные члены.

The fairy-tale was boring and stupid. — Сказка была скучной и глупой.

В сложносочиненном предложении союз and используется для связи частей, как «и» или «а» в русском языке.

She opened the book and the fairy-tale started. — Она открыла книгу, и сказка началась.

We live in London and my friends live in Manchester. — Мы живем в Лондоне, а мои друзья живут в Манчестере.

Союз but используется как русский союз «но» в простом и сложном предложении.

Простое: The way was long but easy. — Путь был долгим, но легким.

Сложное: The way was short but by the end of it we were exhausted. — Путь был коротким, но к концу мы выбились из сил.

Близок по значению к but, обычно используется для связи частей сложносочиненного предложения.

The storm was strong however no one got hurt. — Буря была сильной, однако никто не пострадал.

It’s an expensive tour however it’s worth it. — Это дорогая экскурсия, однако она того стоит.

Обратите внимание, что союз as well as — это не то же, что and. В части предложения с as well as говорится о том, что мы уже знали, а главное предложение вводит новую информацию.

Chuck can drive a truck as well as a bus. — Чак может водить грузовик, также как и автобус.

Подразумевается, что вы уже знаете, что Чак умеет водить автобус. Я лишь добавляют, что он водит еще и грузовик. Это предложение можно перефразировать так: «Чак может водить не только автобус, но и грузовик».

Chuck car drive a truck and a bus. — Чак может водить грузовик и автобус

Здесь подразумевается, что вы не знали об умении Чака водить вообще что-либо, я сообщаю, что он водит и грузовик, и автобус. Смысл изменился.

Следующие сочинительные союзы используются преимущественно в простых предложениях.

Both you and your sister are good students. — И ты, и твоя сестра хорошие ученики.

The monkey said she was both smart and beautiful. — Обезьяна сказала, что она как умная, так и красивая.

You can chose either a safe way or a fast way. — Ты можешь выбрать или безопасный способ, или быстрый способ.

You either eat pizza or have a six-pack. — Ты либо ешь пиццу, либо у тебя кубики пресса.

I am neither optimist nor pessimist. — Я ни оптимист, ни пессимист.

You neither sing nor talk. — Ты и не поешь, и не говоришь.

Подчинительные союзы в английском языке

Подчинительные союзы используются для связи главной и придаточной частей сложноподчиненного предложения. Часто в роли подчинительных союзов выступают союзные местоимения when, that и другие.

Examples of sentences with adversative connectors

The examples of adversative connectors presented below are taken from Rivera Montealegre Rubén Darío’s work: his life and his work (2012).

Except

“But nothing by Góngora survives in the work of that generation; Except for the admirable Góngora, a poem by Cernuda, which has nothing to do with Gongorian ”.

More

“We have a great poet who has produced a work of unusual beauty and has carried out a renewal and fruitful movement in the letters of America and Spain.

Can you have two conjunctions in a sentence?

Is because a real word?

For example, the American Heritage Dictionary, whose entry is representative, reports that because is a conjunction, but also that there is a word spelled because of that is a preposition. Traditional grammar recognizes that conjunctions come in two varieties: subordinating conjunctions and coordinating conjunctions.

Is unless a conjunction word?

As mentioned above, unless is a conjunction which we use in conditional phrases.

How Unless is used in a sentence?

What does until mean?

How can I use the word unless in a sentence?

I won’t pay if you don’t provide the goods immediately. I won’t pay unless you provide the goods immediately. If you don’t study dilligently, you’ll never understand trigonometry. Unless you study dilligently, you’ll never understand trigonometry.

What type of conjunction is unless?

What is unless in grammar?

Unless means if not. We use it in conditional sentences instead of if not. Unless can be used with present, past and past perfect tenses. Use unless with present tenses when talking about the future.

Types
of coordinating conjunction

I hope you have already learned the first
two parts of coordinating conjunction and types in the previous part. conjunction
in a sentence connects two or more than two various substances of
grammar. Here you will go through the most advanced part of the conjunctions

What is difference between conjunction and connective?

Connectives join two separate ideas in two sentences or paragraphs. and Conjunctions join two ideas in the same sentence.

Characteristics

The adversative connectors mark an oppositional relationship towards some conclusion that might have been thought in the first instance: «You have a lot of money, but you live without many luxuries.»

The related elements can be within the sentence: «The problem is not in the structure, but in the content.» They can also be separate sentences: “She’s very smart. However, her grades are low.

On the other hand, of the adversative connectors the conjunction «but» is taken as the prototype; this can be used in all cases. On the other hand, the other opposing links have certain restrictions on their use.

There are two large groups of adversative connectors: restrictive and exclusive. The latter express an incompatibility in the statements (one excludes the other). In the former there is no such incompatibility.

In this way, the conjunctions «but», «more», «but» and «although» are part of the restrictive ones («It works, although it has certain details»). On the other hand, the conjunction «but» belongs to the exclusive ones («It does not have buttons, but levers»).

In addition, other conjunctive phrases and lexicalized adverbs have acquired restrictive or exclusive adversative value. Among them are: «however», «nevertheless», «with everything», «except», «except», «rather» and others.
