Бабушка просила купить мяса и молока, и рыбы заодно возьмем. На обратном пути нужно купить картошки и хлеба. А если останется время, то купим на завтра цветы и торт.» Я постаралась сосчитать, сколько еще разных магазинов предстоит обойти этой семье, чтобы выполнить план. Не знаю, чем закончились их похождения, но именно так у меня появилась идея рассказать вам о названиях магазинов на английском языке.
Всем знакомо слово shop. Оно может быть как существительным (магазин), так и глаголом (делать покупки). Существует слово store, которое приводится в словаре, как синоним слова shop. Между ними существует определенная разница, но нет четкого правила, которое гласит, как эти слова различать. Shop – это не только магазин, где можно что-либо купить, но и место, где можно получить определенные услуги: barber shop, coffee shop. В американском английском магазин чаще называют store, особенно когда имеют в виду продуктовый магазин (grocery store).
Store – это также однотипные магазины одной розничной сети. Store – это то место, где реализуются товары: department store (универмаг), chain store (сетевой магазин), warehouse store (оптовый магазин), convenience store (круглосуточный магазин, торгующий необходимыми товарами и продуктами).
Со словами shop и store есть устойчивые словосочетания, например corner shop – магазинчик с удобным расположением, где можно купить необходимые товары (BrE), а в AmE — это corner store. Универмаг называют department store, но никак не department shop. Еще одно отличие, на которое указывают словари: store, в отличие от shop, часто имеет большой запас и выбор товаров (еще одно значение store – склад, запас).
Сейчас большинство людей из-за своей занятости и дефицита времени предпочитают ходить в supermarket, но свежие продукты можно купить и на рынке (market или marketplace). На рынке продают с лотка, с прилавка, который британцы называют stall, а американцы stand. Торговля может вестись из ларька, палатки: kiosk, иногда vendor kiosk. Vendor – торговец, обычно торгующий на улице или на стихийном рынке.
Но есть еще множество специализированных магазинов, где вы можете купить еду. Что интересно, названия таких магазинов часто происходят не от названия товара, который там продается, а от названия человека, который там работает: пекарь, мясник и так далее. Еще один момент – многие названия магазинов имеют апостроф S в конце. Об этом подробно рассказывается в статье про притяжательный падеж.
Хлебный магазин, булочная на английском вовсе не bread shop, а baker’s. Baker – это пекарь, соответственно baker’s – магазин пекаря, где он продает свой товар: хлеб и выпечку.
Магазин мясной тоже берет название от своего хозяина: butcher’s. Meat shop не подходит.
Рыбный магазин может иметь два названия: fish-shop или fishmonger’s. Fishmonger – это продавец рыбы, а fisherman – рыболов, не путайте их. Рыболова не нужно трогать, когда говорите о рыбном магазине.
Еще один продавец – greengrocer. Он продаёт зелень, фрукты и овощи. Соответственно, его магазин называется в британском варианте английского greengrocer’s.
Grocer’s – это магазин, в котором можно приобрести различные продовольственные товары, бакалейный магазин.
Если вы любитель сладкого, то часто заходите в confectioner’s – в кондитерскую. Британцы называют этот магазин sweetshop.
Специализированный магазин, в котором продают сигареты – это tobacconist’s shop (табачная лавка).
Ситуация с магазинами спиртного в Америке обстоит иначе, чем у нас. Не всякий магазин может продавать алкоголь навынос. Существуют dram shops – питейные заведения, иными словами кафе, имеющие лицензию на продажу алкогольных напитков для распития в заведении. Если вы хотите приобрести алкоголь, чтобы употребить дома, то вам нужен package store – магазин спиртных напитков, магазин по продаже спиртных напитков навынос. Купив бутылку спиртного, вам необходимо её завернуть в бумажный пакет, чтобы она не привлекала внимания, именно поэтому магазин и называется package store. Ликеро-водочные магазины также называют off-licence или liquor store.
Deli (сокращенно от delicatessen) – магазин кулинарии, гастроном, где продают как полуфабрикаты, так и готовые блюда.
