Foreign languages are absolutely necessary for people nowadays, because of our growing international contacts with foreign countries. It is useful to speak at least one foreign language as with its help we can communicate with people who speak it and this ability is useful in our life.
In my school I learn English, French and Latin. I like English and that is why it is one of my favorite subjects. But I don’t really like French and Latin because I don’t completely understand them. I would like to speak at least 3 foreign languages. English, French and Spanish.

But to make this process quicker and more interesting people usually try to watch films in language they learn, read books in original and travel to countries where the language they learn is native.

It is the language of computer technology. To know English today is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for every good specialist. The English language is a wonderful language. It is the language of the great literature. It is the language of William Shakespeare, Jonathan Swift, Walter Scott, Charles Dickens. The great German poet Goethe once said, «He, who knows no foreign language, does not know his own one.» That is why in order to understand oneself and environment one has to study foreign languages.

It is also the major language of diplomacy. Hundreds and hundreds of books, magazines and newspapers are printed in English and real all over the world. 75% of the world’s mail and 60% of the world’s telephone calls are in English. Half of the world’s scientific literature is written in English too.
English is spoken by more than 350 million people. It is the official language of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland of the United States of America, of Australia and New Zealand. English is used as one of the official languages in Canada, the Republic of South Africa and the Irish Republic. It’s also spoken as second language speakers in many parts of Asia and Africa.
The number of second language speakers may soon exceed the number of native speakers. In Russia English is very popular: it is studied at schools, colleges, universities, and sometimes even at nurse schools. There are also other languages that are popular in the world. For example over 1000 million people use Chinese, the first language in the number of people who speak it, it means that out one of every five people in whole world speaks Chinese. Another popular language is Arabic, which is the official language of several Asia’s countries (Iran, Iraq, Syria, United Arab Emirates and others).

When you learn a foreign language, you should develop all your skills. You should study grammar, do exercises, read texts and even books, listen to the speech of native speakers, speak and do writing tasks. It is essential not to concentrate only on some aspects and ignore others.
Studying grammar and doing exercises on vocabulary may be boring and difficult at the same time. You may lose an interest to them very quickly. That’s why you should vary your studies. Nowadays it is much easier to do it, as we have the internet connection and the access to many useful resources.
You may start from watching cartoons with subtitles which are not very difficult to understand. When your vocabulary will be broadened, you may turn to movies and series. Eventually, you will be able to feel at ease watching them even without subtitles.
Moreover, you have an opportunity to learn a foreign language with the help of native speakers. And this is not about lessons on Skype. I am talking about modern social networks by means of which you can get in touch with people from other countries and practice their mother tongue chatting or talking with them.

Learning a foreign language is not easy, it takes much time and effort. People learn foreign languages for different reasons. Nowadays more and more people travel around the world. So, it’s necessary to learn foreign languages to communicate with other people, to understand them and to be understood.

Some people learn foreign languages just for a hobby because it improves memory and broadens their minds. The role of foreign languages in modern society is increasing nowadays. More and more people realize the importance of knowing a foreign language as it makes your life richer in many ways. Thanks to the knowledge of foreign languages you can read books and newspapers in the original, translate articles, communicate to native speakers, broaden your horizons and travel more easily. Moreover, knowing a foreign language can help you find a well-paid job in such fields as advertising, science and technology, foreign trade and banking or tourism and you can even get a chance to work abroad.
Of course, speaking a foreign language is difficult. To succeed in it you must work very hard. As for me, to speak English fluently I try to learn new words every day, do lots of grammar exercises, listen to songs in English and watch films with subtitles. I also have a pen pal from Mexico. We exchange messages in English as often as possible. In addition, in summer my parents are planning to send me to an English camp. There I’ll have an opportunity to make new friends and practise my speaking skills.
