Употребление артиклей географическими названиями: страны, города, названия континентов, (полу)островов, гор, пустынь и регионов, названия природных водных резервуаров (реки, озера, моря, океаны) и так далее

В этом уроке рассмотрим употребление артикля с именами собственными. Как Вы помните, в английском языке два артикля: определенный и неопределенный. И можно говорить о так называемом «нулевом» артикле, то есть о случаях, когда артикль не употребляется.

Мы уже отмечали в уроках уровня Elementary, что артикль выполняет смыслоразличительную функцию. Наличие или отсутствие артикля может сильно повлиять на перевод предложения. Артикль в английском языке — это самая неоднозначная вещь в английской грамматике. Артикль больше остальных грамматических явлений употребляется «по интуиции». И чтобы развить эту интуицию, нужно знать основные правила употребления артикля и исключения. Только после этого Вы сможете свободно ориентироваться в артиклях.

Интересно, что артикль можно употреблять (или не употреблять) даже тогда, когда это запрещено правилами! Но только если Вы сможете объяснить, почему Вы употребили тот или иной артикль. В газетах и прочих литературных источниках Вы будете встречать такие моменты использования артиклей, которые не были описаны в учебниках. И чаще всего это не будет ошибкой. Просто далеко не все рассматривается в учебниках.

Обладая прочными базовыми знаниями, Вы без труда поймете нюансы употребления артикля. В случае с географическими именами и названиями нельзя наверняка сказать, что артикль употребляется только так, а не иначе. Поэтому при объяснении правил добавляется «как правило» или «обычно».

Ниже дана информация о классическом употреблении артикля.

• Как вы уже знаете, с названиями стран и городом артикли, как правило, не употребляются.Но, есть исключения:
  The Hague (Гаага)
  страны (по историческим причинам):The Sudan, The Yemen, The Argentina — эти названия стран могут употребляться и без артикля. Также The Netherlands (Нидерланды), так как в названии по историческим причинам присутствует множественное число.The Philippines (по сути, это название группы островов)
  Определенный и неопределенный артикль могут употребляться с названиями городов и стран, но только при наличии особого контекста.It was the Paris of my youth.   Названия континентов: Africa, Europe, America. Даже если перед этими названиями стоят определения, то артикль все равно не ставится: Western Europe, Southern America.
  Горные цепи и хребты: The Urals, The Alps, The Andes.
  Перед названием групп островов всегда идет определенный артикль: The Canaries (Канарские острова), The Kuriles (Курильские острова).Если имеется только название полуострова, то оно употребляется без артиклей.Kamchatka is famous for its geysers.Если после названия присутствует слово peninsular (полуостров), то перед названием уже ставится определенный артикль.The Taimyr peninsular is a very cold place.
  Названия отдельных горных вершин и островов употребляются без артиклей.Горы: Elbrus, Everest; Haiti, Cuba, Kilimanjaro.
  Название некоторых регионов по историческим причинам употребляются с определенным артиклем: The Crimea, The Caucasus, The Ruhr, The Tyrol.Когда в названии области присутствует множественное число, либо имя нарицательное, то, как правило, с такими названиями используется определенный артикль: The Highlands, The Lake District, The Far East.
  Названия всех пустынь идут с определенным артиклем: The Gobi, The Sahara (desert), The Kara-Kum.
• Названия континентов: Africa, Europe, America. Даже если перед этими названиями стоят определения, то артикль все равно не ставится: Western Europe, Southern America.
