A couple of years ago my family and I moved into a new house. It is a nice two-storeyed brick building with a green roof and a high chimney. The house is surrounded with a spacious garden where we plant fruit, vegetables and flowers.

On the ground floor you can find a hall, a large living room with a fireplace, a cosy dining room, a kitchen, and a bathroom.

The unique feature of the ground floor is its winter garden where tropical plants and flowers grow all year round.

The first floor is a calm and quiet place. There are three small bedrooms, a library and a bathroom. The library is equipped with lots of bookshelves, two comfortable armchairs and a desk.

In the bedrooms there are beds, wardrobes and mirrors. When the weather is fine we bring chairs and a table to the balcony and enjoy warm evenings outside.

Right next to the kitchen there is a living room. By the wall there is a big sofa. Opposite the sofa there is a TV. There is also a big bookcase in the corner. I love to read books sitting on the sofa. We spend a lot of time in the living room.

My sister and I have separate bedrooms. They are approximately of the same size and are equipped with all the things we need. There are beds, wardrobes and desks in our rooms.

One of the biggest rooms in our flat is my parents’ bedroom. There is a big double bed, a built-in wardrobe and a chest of drawers with a mirror.

There is a door to the balcony in my parents’ bedroom. I love to spend time on the balcony on warm sunny days. Opposite my parents’ bedroom there is a bathroom.

I love my flat. This month we are going to buy new furniture and our flat will be even better!

Соглашаясь с данным утверждением, я бы хотел подчеркнуть, что в нашей повседневной жизни искусство не так востребовано и необходимо. На самом деле, мы способны прекрасно жить без него и быть вполне удовлетворенными. В добавок, люди могли бы сказать, что не у всех есть какие-либо выдающиеся навыки или врожденный талант к пению или танцам. Таким образом, эти люди всегда будут хуже остальных. Короче говоря, это повлияет на их самоуважение. А это вовсе не круто. Тем не менее, считается, что жизненно необходимо иметь представление о музыке и истории искусства. Думаю, это почти невозможно. Исходя из этой точки зрения, каждый может согласиться с тем, что предметы искусства, безусловно, важны для всех учащихся.

В заключение, я хотел бы упомянуть, что мы все отличаемся. Cколько людей, столько и мнений. Также, у нас есть свои сильные и слабые стороны, и возможности, поэтому бессмысленно говорить, что каждый должен посвятить себя только искусству или науке. В то же время, в 21 веке лучше быть образованным, разносторонним и придерживаться широких взглядов, чтобы достичь целей. Вот так–то.

We can speak about art as a science. However I want to speak about its kinds, especially about film industry, paintings, literature and modern art. Let us start with the film industry. There are different genres of the films, for example, biopic, drama, comedies, thrillers and so on. I like breath-taking films. Films are, first of all, visual form of the art. Paintings are also visual form of the art. I like the works of I.K. Aivazovsky, for example. I am a bookworm so literature is my favourite kind of art. I like detective stories. Modern art is often misunderstood, for example, when we speak about invisible art.

It does make sense, to start with that modern people, in general, are fond of grumbling. According to their point of view, life seems to be too complicated and unbearable. However, they always know better, how to make it easier. That’s one of the main reasons, why school subjects are currently under debates. Many people reckon, that, for instance, subjects connected with art are of very little use today. That’s why it’s jolly urgent to pay our attention to this curious topic in order to indicate all advantages and drawbacks of art subjects.

To agree with the statement, I’d like to emphasize, that in our daily life art knowledge is not so demanded and needed. Actually, we are able to live well without art and be quite satisfied with ourselves. In addition, people could say that not everyone has some outstanding skills or natural talent to sing or dance, thus such people would always be worse than others. Bottom line, it will influence their self–respect. And that doesn’t sound cool at all. Nonetheless, it is believed, that it is of vital importance to be aware of music and art history. People suppose, that it strongly effects and even improves the process of self-development, as well as psychism in general. So, there is a germ of truth in it.

Speaking of my opinion, firstly, it would be better to answer the question whether an individual who doesn’t have any experience and knowledge in the art could be considered sophisticated in the modern society with its strict and moral standards. I guess it is almost impossible. From this perspective, everyone can agree, that art subjects are surely important for all students.

In conclusion, I’m going to mention, that we are all different. Opinions differ. We all have our own strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities, therefore it’s senseless to say that everyone should devote themselves to art or science only. At the same time, living in the 21st century, it’s better to be educated, many–sided and maintain an open mind to reach goals. That’s it.

I can listen to any genre of music. It depends on my mood. When I am sad I listen to classical music. When I am happy I like listening to energetic, fast music and hard beat. However, some people listen to one kind of music only and they listen to it no matter what mood they are in. There are a lot of wonderful works of literature. Famous writers and poets created a big variety of poems, stories and novels that are read all over the world. Russian poets and writers like Pushkin, Tolstoy and Dostoevsky are famous all over the world. Their works are translated into many languages. Theatre is a popular kind of arts, too. There are a lot of theatres in Russia, but most of them are situated in Moscow. The Bolshoi Theatre and the Maly Theatre are world famous. If you like opera you should go to the Bolshoi Theatre. The tickets are rather expensive though. The Maly Theatre stages dramas and plays based on classical novels. I am a theatre-goer. I prefer going to drama theatres. I do not like opera and ballet. Not long ago I saw Uncle’s Dream by Dostoevsky in the Vakhtangov Theatre. I liked the play a lot. The decorations were rich and the famous actors played very well. There was a storm of applause after the performance. Nowadays theatres are becoming less and less popular, and cinema has got big popularity instead. There are a lot of cinemas in Moscow: modern and old-fashioned, cheap and expensive. Modern films are full of audio and computer special effects and people go to the cinema to enjoy them. The so-called home cinemas have appeared lately. More and more people buy modern TV-sets with large flat screens and special sound equipment and watch films at home. My favourite art is painting. I enjoy going to art galleries to look at paintings. I think that this type of art will exist forever. Artists express their feelings and emotions in their paintings. There are a lot of art galleries in Moscow, but the most famous one is the Tretyakov Gallery. It has large collections of paintings by Russian and foreign painters. My favourite genre of painting is landscape. I think that Russian landscapists are the best in the world. I love going to this gallery when I have free time. One of my friends draws very well. She is going to enter the University of Arts to become a professional artist. But I think that amateurs are the best artists. Unfortunately I do not have any talent for this or that art. I used to sing in childhood, but then I gave it up. I think that arts are not for me.

Having taken in 1641 a position of a court painter, W. Dobson created many portraits of the royal retinue, knights and dukes. His paintings have become valuable because of their technical brilliance, integrity and disclosure of models’ image and character.

The 18th century was marked by the heyday of British art. This era begins with the works of democratically motivated William Hogarth: his lively portraits and a cycle of satirical prints and paintings. Talented portraitists T. Gainsborough, J. Reynolds, H. Raeburn and A. Ramsey skillfully correlated external solemnity of the works with the inner naturalness and depth of image, its exact social and individual reflection, self-assured and free style of painting.

J. Reynolds headed the Royal Academy of Arts founded in 1768 and delivered lectures. The painter regarded that the ultimate goal of art is a reflection of the moral principles.

A national school of landscape (J. Chrome, T. Gainsborough, R. Wilson, watercolorists T. Girtin and. R. Cozens) had been formed in this period in the UK. The direction of genre painting, brilliant representatives of which are such artists as J. Moreland and J. Wright, had been developing.

T. Gainsborough in his works sought to express love for nature, yearning for the past years of childhood and village life. Gainsborough drew inspiration for creating his paintings from music, which explains his broad stroke, the rhythm in the proportion of forms and colors and texture shining.

Essential role in the English culture of the 18-19th centuries was played by the works of everyday and political cartoons genre. Notable examples of this trend are the works by T. Rowlandson and J. Gillrey.

Typical for the British fine arts of the 1st half of the 19th century are the works of romanticists-fantasts: confident landscape artist William Turner and graphic artist William Blake. Works by John Constable, the founder of the realistic scenery filled with life freshness, a talented landscape and historical artist R. P. Bonington and great masters of the watercolor landscape D. Cox and J.C. Cotman have become well-known.

Artists W. Morris, W. Crane and E. Burne-Jones saw the purpose of their works in adding the elements of aesthetics into life, exaltation of the handmade crafts to counterbalance faceless machine production.

British genre painting of the 2nd half of the 19th century bears the imprint of the literary excitement and sentimentality, which is reflected in the works by W. H. Herkomer and W. Frith. Etchings by S. Hayden, pictures of the Scottish masters: genre artist W. McTaggart and still life artist W. McGregor are filled with a sense of the present time.

J. M. Whistler supplemented the legacy of British painting with the acute observation and gorgeous color harmony of the impressionism, which was developed by W. Steer and W. Sickert, the creators of the «New English Art Club», which was founded in 1886-1886.

Artist of the “Club” sought to recreate everyday life, the images of the ordinary people in their works; they were looking for ways of picturing true contemporary reality. W. Steer was famous for wonderful landscapes, which clearly convey the state of nature: the weather, humidity, daytime. W. Sickert skillfully portrayed seemingly lackluster themes, in which deep feelings and dramatic emotional state of a person were hidden.

Realistic direction is inherent for the British fine arts of the first half of the 20th century. Like in other countries, communities of progressively oriented artists who sought to reflect objective reality in their works came up in England. The thread of resistance to fascism runs through the works of the interwar and war period.

After the war, the British masters worked on realistic works about life of the ordinary people. The seamy sides of life are reflected in a number of works by J. Bratby, J. Smith, E. Middledich.

Painting is very complex aspect of creativity, which is presented by a variety of movements: the Avant-gardism, the Impressionism, the Surrealism, the Abstractionism, the Hyperrealism, the Naturalism, etc. Due to the variety of movements, artists always create their own styles, attracted the specific audience. Every person, who likes or just respects the painting as a segment of the art, has a favorite artist. My favorite painter is Salvador Dali.

He has a unique and unrepeatable style and his pictures could not be confused with works of other masters. The most famous works of Dali are “The Persistence of Memory” (1931), “Galatea of the Spheres” (1952) and “The Elephants” (1948). All his works look like sophisticated puzzles where he expresses the opinion according to politics, women, and philosophy in symbols. He told that usually his wife inspired him to create these works, but sometimes ideas came into his mind groundlessly.

Joshua Reynolds was a great theoretician of painting, his scientific works on fine art were studied by more than one generation of artists.

Reynolds’ rival, Thomas Gainsborough earned his life with magnificent portraits of the nobility, but his favorite genre of painting was the landscape.
