TEXT II. THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF RUSSIA
The oldest state public library in Russia, the National Library of Russia is the second largest library in Russia with holdings of more than 33 million volumes. It is the national center of librarianship and bibliography.
The library officially opened in 1814. The nucleus of the original collection was the collection, brought to St. Petersburg from Warsaw by two Polish aristocrats and bibliophiles. Throughout its history, the library has had an enormous influence on the political, cultural, and scientific life of Russia.
The library continued to function during the siege of Leningrad from 1941 to 1944, despite the evacuation of valuable materials. In 1992, after the dissolution of the USSR, the library acquired the name Russian National Library.
The library possesses the world’s most complete collection of Russian books and periodicals. Among the treasures of the collections are early Slavic printed works, the largest collection of books from the Petrine era and the Free Russian Press collection (about 15,000 illegal publications dating from 1853 to 1917).
The Manuscript Division holds the world’s richest collection of Old Russian and Slavonic manuscripts from the 11to the 17century. Among the library’s other treasures are personal library of Voltaire, consisting of 7,000 volumes, archives of such public figures as Peter I, Catherine II, Mikhail Kutuzov, Alexander Suvorov, Alexander Griboyedov, Nikolai Gogol, Mikhail Lermontov, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Anna Akhmatova, Alexander Blok and others.
The National Library of Russia is a custodian of Russia’s cultural heritage. It holds a unique place in Russian history and is recognized as one of the Russia‘s foremost cultural institutions.

TEXT I. READING CULTURE
Russia is not the most reading country in the world any more. According to the statistics only 10 % of Russians read books everyday and 35% of Russians do NOT read books at all, which is a worrying fact.

The development of mobile and computer electronics allows giving up printed materials and reading from the screen of a mobile phone, electronic book or from a computer monitor. However, information obtained in this way does not come to stay. People scan information, understanding all but remembering little. Many publishers and Internet resources work on the principle: the simpler the easier to understand. Simple texts that we read simplify our minds.
We should read books. If people know their language and speak it well and read much, they live in a great country. Happiness, health and success of the nation very much depend on what and how much it reads. We should understand that those who read books in this world control those who prefer watching TV and spending time in social networks.
So, how to promote reading? Russian social organizations launched some projects, such as ―Books in the Parks‖ and project ―Read‖. ―Books in the Parks‖ is the campaign which aims to turn city parks into arenas for meeting with writers. The parks are equipped with kiosks where visitors can purchase books for the lowest price. Project ―Read‖ popularizes teens-reading in the video with Russian classics Pushkin, Gogol and Dostoevsky who rap «В начитанном теле начи-
Russian libraries also try to popularize literature. Popular initiatives are bookcrossing, ―Biblionight‖ and the creation of book clubs.
