This song was the first single off of «Highway To Hell» album. It is one of the band’s most-popular tracks. It has been played at almost all of their concerts.
One origin of this song’s title was a nickname «Highway to Hell» given to the Canning Highway in Australia. It runs from Fremantle and ends at a bar «The Raffles» and has a very steep slope at the end where many people got killed by driving too fast over the top of the hill.
Angus Young (guitarist) once said that being constantly on the road while touring felt like being on a highway to hell. AC/DC had to promote their several previous studio albums and the tour schedule was really tough.
Brian Johnson (vocalist) said of this song’s origin in October 2009, «It was written about being on the bus on the road where it takes forever to get from Melbourne or Sydney to Perth across the Nullarbor Plain. When the sun’s setting in the west and you’re driving across it, it is like a fire ball.»
At the time this song was released, there was a highway Route 666 in the USA running through Arizona and Utah. It was renumbered later because of rumours of ghosts and unexplained events.
This song was the band’s first one to chart in the USA. It helped the album become a big success with more then seven million copies sold there.
