As for the broad sense of this word, here you also find different definitions of it. It can mean the figurative interpretation of the reality or the process or the result of the expressing of the world in an artistic way. However I want to speak about its kinds, especially about film industry, paintings, literature and modern art. Let us start with the film industry. There are different genres of the films, for example, biopic, drama, comedies, thrillers and so on. I like breath-taking films. Films are, first of all, visual form of the art. Paintings are also visual form of the art. I like the works of I.K. Aivazovsky, for example. I am a bookworm so literature is my favourite kind of art. I like detective stories. Art There are many different types of arts in the world. The most popular ones are cinema, theater, literature, music and painting. I’d like to tell you a little bit about each of these arts. First of all, my favourite type of art is music. It has always fascinated me how people create such melodic tunes. I love all genres of music, be it jazz, classical, pop, rock, reggae, opera, blues or else. Music can change my mood. If I’m sad I try to listen to something cheerful, for example, to disco music. If I want to think in loneliness, I prefer alternative rock. I’m glad that there are so many devices nowadays which allow us to listen to music everywhere we wish. It includes radios, MP-3 players, CD-players, mobile phones. My second favourite type of art is literature. I like reading interesting novels and detective stories. I also value the works of famous writers and poets. Speaking of Russian writers I’ve read some works of Pushkin, Lermontov, Tolstoy, Turgenev, Dostoevsky and Mayakovski. Their works are world-famous and many books have been translated into other languages. Theater is gradually becoming an outdated type of art. On the contrary, cinemas become more popular. There are many great theatres and large cinemas in Russia. I think people should respect the work of actors and attend theatres more often. As for me, I don’t really like cinemas. If I want to watch a new movie, I buy and watch it at home. Painting is another form of art. Museums and art galleries have always attracted me. I think that painting is a rather interesting activity. One of my friends is really good at it. He is going to enter the University of Arts after graduating from school. His works include oil paintings and pastel. I really admire his talent. I wish I could be as good at painting as him.

Art plays a great role in our life. It forms our attitude and perception of the world, gives us more complete picture of the diverse world, lets us learn something new previously unknown. It can help person to open himself, to have a new look at this world. Art is expressed in various works. This can be music and pictures, installations and art objects, etc. Of all the arts, I prefer cinema, music and painting. In this essay I would like to talk more precisely about painting. My favourite trend in art is surrealism. I was always very excited by paintings of this genre. Many people do not like surrealism, but I believe that this is connected with the fact that the surrealistic painting is needed to think. Everyone can see something of his own. Hidden idea, enigma is always in these pictures. In my opinion this is very interesting. Such hobby as painting develops creative skills and creative mind. My favourite artist is Salvador Dali and a favourite picture is “The Persistence of Time”. In my opinion his pictures reflect the essence of surrealism best of all. However I would add that all kinds of painting are important, necessary and interesting. For example I also like pictures by Aivazovsky, Repin, especially “Sadko in the Underwater Kingdom “, Rembrandt, Van Gogh. Art develops person’s inner world, allows us to open ourselves up to new and gives us a place for creativity and imagination. I believe that art and culture are an essential part of our existence. In my opinion it would be difficult to imagine the further development of mankind without art because it teaches us beautiful, new, exciting, unusual things. Theatre is a form of art where a group of people performs in front of a live audience. The performance is usually based on a real or imagined event. The performers communicate this experience to the public through gestures, songs and words.

Music

Music has always been an important part of society. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and vocal techniques ranging from singing to rapping.

Architecture

Architecture is the art that provides us the physical environment we live in. Architecture is both the process and the product of planning, designing, and constructing buildings or any other structures.

It does make sense, to start with that modern people, in general, are fond of grumbling. According to their point of view, life seems to be too complicated and unbearable. However, they always know better, how to make it easier. That’s one of the main reasons, why school subjects are currently under debates. Many people reckon, that, for instance, subjects connected with art are of very little use today. That’s why it’s jolly urgent to pay our attention to this curious topic in order to indicate all advantages and drawbacks of art subjects. To agree with the statement, I’d like to emphasize, that in our daily life art knowledge is not so demanded and needed. Actually, we are able to live well without art and be quite satisfied with ourselves. In addition, people could say that not everyone has some outstanding skills or natural talent to sing or dance, thus such people would always be worse than others. Bottom line, it will influence their self–respect. And that doesn’t sound cool at all. Nonetheless, it is believed, that it is of vital importance to be aware of music and art history. People suppose, that it strongly effects and even improves the process of self-development, as well as psychism in general. So, there is a germ of truth in it. Speaking of my opinion, firstly, it would be better to answer the question whether an individual who doesn’t have any experience and knowledge in the art could be considered sophisticated in the modern society with its strict and moral standards. I guess it is almost impossible. From this perspective, everyone can agree, that art subjects are surely important for all students. In conclusion, I’m going to mention, that we are all different. Opinions differ. We all have our own strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities, therefore it’s senseless to say that everyone should devote themselves to art or science only. At the same time, living in the 21st century, it’s better to be educated, many–sided and maintain an open mind to reach goals. That’s it.

Shakespeare was playwright and poet. As he rose in popularity, he wrote plays for the famous Globe Theatre, a round, open-roofed building that housed approximately 2,000 spectators. Later Shakespeare became one of the owners of the Globe Theatre. Unlike many writers who never live to enjoy their fame, Shakespeare achieved great recognition during his lifetime. Having taken in 1641 a position of a court painter, W. Dobson created many portraits of the royal retinue, knights and dukes. His paintings have become valuable because of their technical brilliance, integrity and disclosure of models’ image and character.

The 18th century was marked by the heyday of British art. This era begins with the works of democratically motivated William Hogarth: his lively portraits and a cycle of satirical prints and paintings. Talented portraitists T. Gainsborough, J. Reynolds, H. Raeburn and A. Ramsey skillfully correlated external solemnity of the works with the inner naturalness and depth of image, its exact social and individual reflection, self-assured and free style of painting.

J. Reynolds headed the Royal Academy of Arts founded in 1768 and delivered lectures. The painter regarded that the ultimate goal of art is a reflection of the moral principles.

A national school of landscape (J. Chrome, T. Gainsborough, R. Wilson, watercolorists T. Girtin and. R. Cozens) had been formed in this period in the UK. The direction of genre painting, brilliant representatives of which are such artists as J. Moreland and J. Wright, had been developing.

T. Gainsborough in his works sought to express love for nature, yearning for the past years of childhood and village life. Gainsborough drew inspiration for creating his paintings from music, which explains his broad stroke, the rhythm in the proportion of forms and colors and texture shining.

Essential role in the English culture of the 18-19th centuries was played by the works of everyday and political cartoons genre. Notable examples of this trend are the works by T. Rowlandson and J. Gillrey.

Typical for the British fine arts of the 1st half of the 19th century are the works of romanticists-fantasts: confident landscape artist William Turner and graphic artist William Blake. Works by John Constable, the founder of the realistic scenery filled with life freshness, a talented landscape and historical artist R. P. Bonington and great masters of the watercolor landscape D. Cox and J.C. Cotman have become well-known.

Artists W. Morris, W. Crane and E. Burne-Jones saw the purpose of their works in adding the elements of aesthetics into life, exaltation of the handmade crafts to counterbalance faceless machine production.

British genre painting of the 2nd half of the 19th century bears the imprint of the literary excitement and sentimentality, which is reflected in the works by W. H. Herkomer and W. Frith. Etchings by S. Hayden, pictures of the Scottish masters: genre artist W. McTaggart and still life artist W. McGregor are filled with a sense of the present time.

J. M. Whistler supplemented the legacy of British painting with the acute observation and gorgeous color harmony of the impressionism, which was developed by W. Steer and W. Sickert, the creators of the «New English Art Club», which was founded in 1886-1886.

Artist of the “Club” sought to recreate everyday life, the images of the ordinary people in their works; they were looking for ways of picturing true contemporary reality. W. Steer was famous for wonderful landscapes, which clearly convey the state of nature: the weather, humidity, daytime. W. Sickert skillfully portrayed seemingly lackluster themes, in which deep feelings and dramatic emotional state of a person were hidden.

Realistic direction is inherent for the British fine arts of the first half of the 20th century. Like in other countries, communities of progressively oriented artists who sought to reflect objective reality in their works came up in England. The thread of resistance to fascism runs through the works of the interwar and war period.

After the war, the British masters worked on realistic works about life of the ordinary people. The seamy sides of life are reflected in a number of works by J. Bratby, J. Smith, E. Middledich.

Painting is very complex aspect of creativity, which is presented by a variety of movements: the Avant-gardism, the Impressionism, the Surrealism, the Abstractionism, the Hyperrealism, the Naturalism, etc. Due to the variety of movements, artists always create their own styles, attracted the specific audience. Every person, who likes or just respects the painting as a segment of the art, has a favorite artist. My favorite painter is Salvador Dali.

He has a unique and unrepeatable style and his pictures could not be confused with works of other masters. The most famous works of Dali are “The Persistence of Memory” (1931), “Galatea of the Spheres” (1952) and “The Elephants” (1948). All his works look like sophisticated puzzles where he expresses the opinion according to politics, women, and philosophy in symbols. He told that usually his wife inspired him to create these works, but sometimes ideas came into his mind groundlessly.

The first artist of English origin, William Hogarth, opened the golden age of British painting. Hogarth created the paintings in the style of realism and was a master of engraving.
