Коннотация цветообозначения в английских и русских пословицах

В своей работе мы рассматриваем отобранные случайным образом пословицы на английском языке и их русские эквиваленты, в которых присутствует цветообозначение. Мы также проводим их анализ с целью выявления негативной или положительной коннотации и сравниваем полученные результаты в обеих лингвокультурах.
Приведём некоторые примеры пословиц и итоги их изучения [1, 2, 3]:
В данной пословице чёрный цвет обладает искуственно негативной коннотацией. Фактически же, при более тщательном рассмотрении, этот цвет нейтрален. Это связано с трактовкой изречения: часто бывает, что на первый взгляд нам что-то кажется плохим (например, человек), но на деле – всё наоборот. Белый цвет в данном случае как раз подчёркивает что-то хорошее и светлое в изначально чёрном (к примеру, добрые поступки) и, таким образом, придаёт всей пословице положительное значение.
Чёрный цвет выступает в резко отрицательном значении. Он наделяется наивысшей степенью негатива, т.к. даже чёрта нельзя соотнести с ним, т.е. чёрт может быть не таким страшным и зловещим по сравнению с той чернотой, с которой его ассоциируют.
Чёрный цвет употреблён в этой пословице в негативном значении. Часто люди видят недостатки других людей, однако своих словно не замечают. В данном случае чёрный цвет подразумевает таких людей, которые любят судить других, а сами считают себя идеальными во всём.
Здесь чёрный цвет имеет нейтральное значение. Раскрывается его естественная суть – неспособность стать иным, быть перекрашенным в другие тона. Суть пословицы заключается в невозможности изменить природу человека, его характер. Нужно принимать людей такими, какие они есть: с их достоинствами (обозначены белым цветом) и недостатками (ассоциируются с чёрным цветом). Таким образом, белый цвет имеет положительную коннотацию, а чёрный – мнимо негативную.
Обычно белый цвет ассоциируется с чистотой, безупречностью и чем-то добрым. В данной пословице, напротив, говорится о том, что каждый имеет свои недостатки, но без них не прочувствовалась бы вся прелесть какого-либо явления или какой-либо вещи. То есть эти самые недостатки помогают отразить преимущества ярче и красивее. Поэтому белый цвет здесь приобретает мнимо положительный окрас. Он имеет значение светлого, но в то же время проявляет и свою тёмную сторону. Чёрный же цвет выступает здесь в прямом (общепринятом) значении; отражает вышеупомянутые недостатки, а значит, он имеет отрицательную коннотацию.
В этой пословице серый отражает не только цвет в своем прямом значении, но и старость/мудрость – в переносном. Здесь взросление несет положительный смысл – приобретение опыта, ума, знаний. Следовательно, серый цвет имеет положительную коннотацию.
Серый в данном случае не позволяет отличить никаких других цветов и, значит, он скрывает как положительные оттенки (поступки, людей), так и отрицательные. Поэтому, на наш взгляд, серый цвет имеет негативную коннотацию. В этой пословице с помощью него оправдывают неблагоприятные поступки или ошибочные суждения людей, потому что никто не идеален.
Золото или золотой цвет здесь имеет неблагоприятное значение. Обычно золотой оттенок – тёплый и несёт положительные эмоции. Однако в данном случае интерпретация пословицы помогает понять, что зачастую люди не задумываются, с чем или с кем имеют дело; они могут заблуждаться, предполагать, что всё просто прекрасно. Тем не менее, это только внешне; что именно скрывается за тем или иным человеком, поступком, вещью, люди могут даже не представлять. Под блеском золота возможно скрывается некрасивый, неприятный оттенок (человек, поступок).
Опять же золотой оттенок выступает в негативном значении. Здесь золотой цвет символизирует выгоду в корыстных целях. Порой люди ничего и никого не ценят, и главное для них – это угодить себе любимому. В русском же эквиваленте для придания отрицательной коннотации слову «золото» выбран соответствующий синонимичный перевод – «деньги» и даже уменьшительно-уничижительный вариант «денежка», чтобы продемонстрировать мелочность и ничтожность намерений и поступков.
В общем, эта пословица близка по значению предыдущим: человеку ничто не поможет, если он изнутри гнилой. Как бы он не выглядел, каким бы не казался, если человек пропитан подлостью, то он таковым и останется. Золотой цвет символизирует ошибочность выводов людей, поэтому имеет здесь мнимо положительную коннотацию.
Серебряный цвет выступает в положительном значении. Здесь он олицетворяет отсутствие или наличие материального положения, с помощью которого можно (не) реализовать свои потребности: нанять работника, получить услугу и т.п.
Опять же серебристый цвет употреблён в благоприятном значении. В данной пословице серебряный цвет занимает главенствующее место во всей цветовой гамме и превосходит по своим характеристикам белый – самый светлый, чистый и идеальный цвет.
Серебряный цвет приобретает здесь положительное значение. Слово «облако» в данном случае используется в переносном значении – того, что омрачает жизнь, несёт огорчение или беспокойство. Наличие же «серебряной подкладки» символизирует нечто хорошее, доброе, светлое – как бы даёт надежду на лучшее.
Серебряный и золотой оттенки имеют в этой пословице положительную коннотацию. Однако золотой цвет – в большей степени, нежели серебряный. При помощи градации показывается, что речь – это хорошо, но с молчанием она не сравнится. Ведь промолчать иногда гораздо лучше, чем говорить без пользы. Молчание также порой бывает мудрым решением, т.к. сила человека заключается не в том, чтобы переговорить собеседника или оппонента, а в том, чтобы вовремя промолчать и избежать возможного конфликта.
Синий цвет проявляется в двояком значении. Под ним в данной пословице подразумевается степень благородства, породы, качества. Здесь проводится граница – синий синему рознь. Смысл этой пословицы можно передать так: все люди (вещи) одинаковы, но есть более благородные (качественные), с более высокой моралью и нравственными качествами (ноские, стойкие, надежные) или более высокого социального происхождения (более именитые – о брендах).
Снова синий цвет имеет положительную коннотацию. Здесь он используется для обозначения чего-то нереального, красивого, безупречного, трудно досягаемого – идеала, мечты (по большей части несбыточной).
Зелёный цвет в данной пословице используется в благоприятном значении. Будучи употреблённым в сравнительной степени, он приобретает оттенок чего-то лучшего, более красивого и привлекательного. Тем не менее, можно утверждать, что здесь зелёный имеет мнимо положительную коннотацию, т.к. трава везде одинаково зелёная, а зеленее она кажется только от того, что растёт на чужой лужайке. На наш взгляд, в данном случае проводится скрытое сравнение с еще одним значением слова «green» – завистью, чувством досады, вызванным зачастую мнимыми успехами другого.
Зелёный цвет олицетворяет прочность, надёжность дружбы. Если держаться от друзей или соседей на расстоянии, не докучать, то на протяжении лет дружба будет оставаться такой же «свежей», взаимной как и вначале. Следовательно, зелёный цвет в данном изречении несёт положительную нагрузку.
Красный цвет имеет двоякую окраску в данной пословице. С одной стороны, он обладает позитивным значением, ассоциируясь с хорошей погодой, которая принёсет радость пастуху; а с другой, он имеет негативную коннотацию, т.к. связан с ненастьем и вызывает беспокойство у пастуха.
В данной пословице красный цвет обладает очевидной положительной коннотацией. Он не только обозначает яркий, насыщенный цвет, но и имеет переносный смысл – «красивый», «привлекательный».
Проведя тщательный анализ английских и русских пословиц, мы пришли к следующим выводам:
1) Несмотря на общепринятое мнение о том, что холодные оттенки обладают исключительно отрицательным значением, на практике это не всегда так.
Большинство отобранных нами пословиц, использующих серебристый оттенок, имеют положительную коннотацию:
а) Every dark cloud has a silver lining.
б) To be born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth.
в) Speech is silver but silence is gold.
г) Бело, да не серебро.
Также благоприятным значением обладает зелёный цвет: A hedge between keeps friendship green. Не нужна соловью золотая клетка, а нужна зеленая ветка.
Синий цвет выступает как в положительном значении: True blue will never stain; так и в отрицательном: Between the devil and the deep blue sea.
Серый цвет имеет мнимо положительное значение: All cats are grey in the dark. Grey doesn’t show the dust. Не всё, что серо, волк.
2) Напротив, тёплые цвета зачастую ассоциируются с чем-то светлым и добрым. Тем не менее, здесь также имеются свои противоречия.
Золотой оттенок является одним из самых тёплых и искрящихся радостью. Однако здесь мы видим, что в обоих языках золотой цвет чаще имеет негативный окрас:
а) All that glitters is not gold. (отрицательное значение)
б) An ass is but an ass, thought laden with gold. (отрицательное значение)
в) Gold is but muck. (отрицательное значение)
г) Speech is silver but silence is gold. (положительное значение)
д) Золото и в грязи блестит. (положительное значение)
Красный же цвет выступает в разных значениях. В английском языке – ярко выраженное отрицательное значение,а в русском – положительное:
а) To catch (smb) red-handed. (отрицательное значение);
б) To paint the town red. (отрицательное значение)
в) To be in the red. (отрицательное значение)
г) Серенькое утро – красненький денёк. (положительное значение)
д) Не всё ненастье, будет и красное солнышко. (положительное значение)
е) На миру и смерть красна. (положительное значение)
3) Чёрный цвет обычно ассоциируется у людей с чем-то тёмным и даже зловещим, и это в большинстве случаев полностью подтверждается в пословицах:
а) A black hen lays a white egg. (мнимо отрицательное значение)
б) You can’t rub on a black pot without getting black. (отрицательное значение)
в) Рубашка бела, да душа черна. (отрицательное значение)
г) Отложить про чёрный день. (отрицательное значение)
д) To be in the black. (положительное значение)
е) Кабы сивому коню чёрную гриву, был бы буланый. (положительное значение)
Белый цвет олицетворяет чистоту, добро, а также надежду. В основном в пословицах этот цвет употреблён в соответствии с общепринятыми представлениями, то есть в благоприятном значении:
а) A black hen lays a white egg. (положительное значение)
б) Милому мила – и без белил бела. (положительное значение)
в) You cannot wash charcoal white. (положительное значение)
г) Every white has its black, and every sweet its sour. (мнимо положительное значение)
д) Бело, да не серебро. (мнимо положительное значение)
4) Многие английские пословицы нельзя перевести дословно, так как суть может быть передана искажённо или непонятно, поэтому в русских эквивалентах очень часто цвета олицетворяют что-либо: какой-то предмет, явление, человека, сравнение с чем-либо и т.п. К примеру:
а) Every white has its black, and every sweet its sour. (Нет розы без шипов)
Белый цвет здесь символизирует розу (сладкое), чёрный – шипы (горькое).
б) True blue will never stain. (Придорожная пыль небо не коптит / И в мусоре сверкает бриллиант)
Синий цвет олицетворяет небо или бриллиант.
в) Two blacks do not make a white. (Злом зла не поправишь / Из лжи правды не вырастишь)
Чёрный цвет выступает в роли зла (лжи), белый – в роли добра (правды).
г) To catch (smb) red-handed. (поймать кого-л. с поличным)
Красный цвет обозначает какой-то проступок, преступление.
д) Золото и в грязи блестит. (A good name keeps its luster in the dark.)
Молчание – золото. (No wisdom like silence.)
Золотой цвет сравнивается с добрым именем или мудростью.
Таким образом, мы проанализировали английские и русские пословицы, в которых присутствуют оттенки и цвета, а также выявили их значение как на русском, так и на английском языке. Как выяснилось, не всегда общепринятые представления совпадают с действительностью. Многие цвета, которые характеризуют в наших представлениях негативные действия, напротив, чаще употребляются с положительной коннотацией и, наоборот, оттенки, олицетворяющие положительные эмоции, порой используются в отрицательном значении. Мы также выяснили, что существуют пословицы, в которых цвета передаются на языке другой культуры с помощью какого-либо предмета или явления, то есть приобретают образное значение. Суть такой трактовки заключается в том, чтобы сделать информацию более понятной и доступной для представителей иной лингвокультуры.

= Что угодно лишь бы держало на плаву вашу лодку.
Это очень прекрасно, что у тебя есть другие интересы, чем у твоей сестры. Что там говорят? На вкус и цвет товарищей нет.
It’s perfectly fine for you to have different interests than your sister. What do they say? Every man to his taste.

букв. Вкусы разнятся (= отличаются).
= Все люди имеют разные вкусы.

БИЛЛ: Что ты имеешь в виду под приличными? Мои галстуки просто классные!
ДЖЕЙН: Ну, ладно. На вкус и цвет товарищей нет.

букв. Разные движения для разных людей.
= Разные ручки (для письма) для разных людей.
ПРИМЕЧАНИЕ: Слово mens грамматически неверное. Окончание s специально добавлено для достижения рифмы и в конечном счете это указывает на иронию.
Мой папочка очень любит водить машину, а я ненавижу часами сидеть за рулем в многочисленных пробках. Я так считаю, что на вкус и цвет товарищей нет.

Все дети рождаются равными, пока (они) не начинают носить одежду. Одни становятся богатыми, другие бедными. Одни становятся успешными, другие жалкими неудачниками.
